Description
The first boat used on the Lower Lakes of the West Branch of the Penobscot River by the Great Northern Paper Company was the side-wheeler steamboat, F.W. Ayer.
The F.W. Ayer was constructed at North Twin Dam in the early 1890s for the Penobscot Log Driving Company. The boiler and other materials were hauled overland from Mattawamkeag by Fred Fowler.
"Rolling a boom" is the term used for rotating a boom of logs along a shore where it is being held by wind, using the momentum of its own circular motion to propel it forward.
