Contributed by Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description
Edward L. Rand, as Secretary of the Champlain Society, detailed and recorded the Society's accomplishments, explorations, scientific discoveries and camp life on Mount Desert Island during the years 1886-1889. The Society moved their meeting space, library, and headquarters from Cambridge to Boston in 1887.
The logbook includes a summary of the Champlain Society's work through 1887, emphasizing geology, meteorology, zoology, photography and history. As the founding members of the Champlain Society grew older, they camped less and enjoyed hotel life more. Members of the Champlain Society were graduating from Harvard, working as professionals, getting married, and having children. In December 1887, the Society voted unanimously that “wives of members of this Society shall be Honorary members thereof.” Champlain Society President, Charles Eliot's marriage to Mary Yale Pitkin was reported in 1888, along with a photograph illustration of the silver cream pitcher the club's members purchased for the wedding gift. Samuel Eliot wed Frances Hopkinson in 1889.
The Champlain Society celebrated their 10 year "Decennial" anniversary in 1890, but fewer scientific accomplishments were realized compared to the early years of the Champlain Society. However, Edward L. Rand traveled to Mount Desert Island several times for botanical expeditions, which subsequently led to the publishing of his book, Flora and Fauna of Mount Desert Island.
