Meyer and Hilda Davis family, 1942

Contributed by Raymond H. Fogler Library

Description

During World War II, two of Meyer and Hilda Davis' children were serving in the military.

This photograph, labeled in an album as the family's "Christmas picture 1942," includes, from left to right, Meyer Davis, Jr. in his Navy uniform, Ginia Davis, Emery Davis, Meyer Davis, Sr., Margie Davis, and Garry Davis, who was serving as an Army pilot.

Additional items in the album reflect the family's blended religious heritage, including certificates from Davis, Jr.'s attendance at Jewish and Episcopalian schools and confirmation exercises at the Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel in Philadelphia in 1935.

Meyer Davis Jr.'s mother, Hilda Emery Davis, was born in Bar Harbor, and converted to Judaism when she married Meyer Davis Sr. The family spent various summers and vacations in Maine.
