Description

This map depicts the areas of Lewiston, Minot and Danville (modern day Auburn) in the region where the Little Androscoggin River and the Great Androscoggin River intersect. Notable on the map are Crocket Farm and the Old Road from New Gloucester.

Also included are two typescript panels from the 20th century pertaining to the history of the map, indicating it was used by Josiah Little in various lawsuits regarding his land. Additional notes mention "these plans were the property of George T. Little...improved under or by Josiah Little".

The land was originally part of the Pejepscot Land Claim. Starting 1714, a group of men known as the Pejepscot Proprietors followed the instruction of the Massachusetts General Court to survey and settle the land around the southern end of the Androscoggin River. Josiah Little served as an agent for the Pejepscot Proprietors in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The George T. (George Thomas) Little mentioned on the map was a long time librarian of Bowdoin College and great-grandson of Josiah Little. Josiah's son Edward (George's grandfather) is the Edward Little for whom Auburn's public high school is named.
