Description
John Holmes (1773-1843), a senator of Massachusetts who later became a resident of Maine, was congratulated by John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) for completing his duties as a commissioner of the fourth article of the Treaty of Ghent.
The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. The fourth article was specific to the Bay of Fundy. Holmes was responsible for determining which islands in the Bay of Fundy belonged to the United States and which belonged to Great Britain.
