Description
On April 29, 1868, John Neal composed a letter to an unknown recipient outlining corrections to his 1866 pamphlet "Account of the Great Conflagration in Portland, July 4th, & 5th, 1866" which he published shortly after the Great Portland Fire.
In this letter, Neal disputes his earlier claim the fire was started by fireworks. Instead, he indicates the fire may have been started by sparks from the tracks of the Grand Trunk Railroad. Neal claims the railroad had been cited for such negligence at least once before, in the vicinity of the fire's origin.
Other corrections outlined include updates regarding property loss, including that of Horatio Jose, as well as questioning the reliability of some of his earlier sources, such as Walter Corey.
