Description
John Hart (1713-1779) was a delegate from New Jersey to the Continental Congress. Previously, he acted as Vice President of the New Jersey Provincial Congress, which is the position he held at the time of this letter. Due to New Jersey being kicked out of the First Continental Congress for opposing independence from Britain, Hart was elected only for the Second Congress, just in time to sign the Declaration of Independence. He later became Treasurer of the Council of Safety.
The letter is addressed to Samuel Tucker (1721-1789) in Trenton, New Jersey. Tucker was the President and Treasurer of the Provincial Congress of New Jersey. The letter certifies that John Carey, "one of the Deputies of the County of Salem," attended a session of Congress in Trenton. It then calculates how much money Carey should be compensated for his work.
