Francis Lewis on the actions of the militia relayed to Congress, Yorktown, 1778

Description

Francis Lewis (1713-1802) was a delegate from New York to the Continental Congress. Originally from Wales, Lewis moved to New York in 1734 and later became a member of the colony's provincial congress. After signing the Declaration of Independence, he signed the Articles of Confederation and in 1779 served as the Chairman of the Continental Board of Admiralty.

The letter's recipient is Pierre VanCoslant. The letter describes the situation of military in 1778 in regards to what had been reported back to Congress. He lists many war generals and explains the movements of their troops, as well as possible future movements by the enemy. He closes by assuring VanCoslant that he "shall give the Hon. Council every material information that comes [t]o my knowledge."
