Description
Arthur Middleton (1742-1787) was a delegate from South Carolina to the Continental Congress. A radical figure in colonial politics, Middleton was a leader of the anti-British American Party. He served for a militia in Charleston during the Revolutionary War, but was captured and released a year later, just months before the writing of this letter. In 1781, Middleton was selected as a delegate to the Congress of the Confederation.
The letter's recipient, John Ross (1726-1800), was a Philadelphia merchant. He was employed by the Committee of Commerce to buy clothes, guns and ammunition for the United States army.
This letter, dated December 24, 1781 in Philadelphia, asks Ross to withdraw "Twenty Spanish milled Dollars" from the state treasury of South Carolina and credit a man named Thomas Smith.
