John Morton appointing William Curry as Physician & Surgeon, Pennsylvania, 1776

Description

John Morton (1725-1777) was a delegate to the Continental Congress from Pennsylvania. He was a member of the colony's provincial assembly and was a appointed justice of the peace in 1757. He later resigned from the assembly to hold a job as the a country sheriff, but eventually returned and was elected Speaker in 1775. He is credited with being the deciding swing vote that pushed the Pennsylvania delegation toward independence in 1776.

This letter is written to Doctor William Curry. Morton, as Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly, is appointing Dr. Curry to be the Physician & Surgeon to the province's militia. His job description requires that he take "steady [a]ttendance on all sick and wounded Persons of the said Battalion" as well as the distribution of medicines for the "Relief & Cure of such persons."
