Description
George Taylor (1716-1781) was a delegate from Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress. Unlike any of his colleagues, Taylor's career began as an indentured ironmaster. He eventually would take over the ironworks in Durham, Pennsylvania, and later move to Easton where he ran it from afar. After being elected to the colony's provincial assembly in 1764, he, along with four other signers from Pennsylvania, were put in the Continental Congress as replacements for the five loyalists who were forced to resign in July of 1776. Upon failing to be renominated to the Congress, Taylor was appointed to Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council in 1777.
The letter's recipient, Richard Backhouse, was most likely the manager of the ironworks at the time of this letter. Taylor is responding to an update about the factory and is requesting that Backhouse send "a few Kettles + Potts" and a few stoves to Easton.
