Description
George Wythe (1726-1806) was a member of the Virginia delegation to the Continental Congress. Wythe was originally a lawyer and is is credited with teaching law to Thomas Jefferson and other influential early American politicians. He continued his private law practice as he began to establish himself as a politician, notably as a clerk for two committees of the House of Burgesses and later as an influential member. He was elected mayor of Williamsburg in 1768, served as Speaker the Virginia House of Delegates and shortly after appointed as a justice on the province's highest court. He continued his career in politics and was an outspoken critic of slavery.
The letter, signed December 22, 1773, requests that Wythe be sent large quantities of red clover and timothy seed. He writes that a man named Mr. Saint George recommended he "procure the seeds from Philadelphia." Wythe does not give a reason for this request.
