Description
In 1915 the people of Kennebunk formed a committee to organize the "Society Circus" designed to raise funds for playground improvements on Park Street.
The circus was held on August 19th at Parsons Field. There were outrageous performances and attractions. Many of the performers, clowns and musicians were local dignitaries, businessmen and their wives who devoted hours of time to the fundraiser, with more than 200 individuals involved in the Big Top performance.
The tent performances included many traditional acts including strong men, bronco riding, juggling, and acrobats. Visitors were reported from as far away as New York and Missouri. The net proceeds from the circus were projected at approximately $1100, a significant amount in 1915.
