Description
The Rogers Fibre Company in Kennebunk was part of the manufacturing heritage and Industrial Age of the town.
Rogers Fibre Company bought out the Leatheroid Company in 1915. So well-known was the Leatheroid Company that many people in Kennebunk interchangeably referred to the leatherboard and fibre board it produced simply by the brand name leatheroid. Leatherboard is made from scraps of vegetable-tanned leather that are ground and pressed into sheets. Fibre board has no virgin materials; it consists of old paper bags, cardboard and scrap paper.
While leatherboard and fibre board’s histories are intertwined, they are two separate and very different products. Leatherboard was first made in Kennebunk in 1876 at the Leatherboard Mill. The National Fibre Board Company came along in 1881 and was incorporated into the Leatheroid Manufacturing Company in 1884.
By 1915, Rogers Fibre Company had united the Leatheroid Manufacturing Company, the National Fibre Board Company and the Mousam Counter Company.
