Description
Thomas Heyward, Jr. (1746-1809) was a delegate to the Continental Congress from South Carolina. While his career in law began in England, he later served in South Carolina as a judge. He was one of the most fervent supporters of the patriot cause in his home colony, aggressively campaigning against the Stamp Act and the absolute submission demanded by the Royal Government. A strong supporter of full independence, Heyward Jr. was captured by the British during the Siege of Charleston in 1780 and remained in captivity until the end of the war.
The letter, dated October 6, 1777, is addressed to the Honorable Mess Franklin, Dean & Lee. Benjamin Franklin, Silas Deane and Arthur Lee severed as a diplomatic delegation in France during the period. Written from the Committee for Foreign Affairs, the letter gives "accurate detail of the war in the northern and middle departments." The lengthy document describes actions from all different aspects of war life, including views and predictions of the British, the state of certain cities, the health of soldiers, navy vessels and much more.
