Description
Grace Doggett picked mussels with two of her children, Dorothy and Samuel "Dayton" Doggett. Grace and her husband, Samuel Bradlee Doggett (1858-1938), bought land on Westport in 1911 for a summer cottage.
Mrs. Doggett's rowboat was pulled up near "Doggett's Castle," a 100-foot high bluff along the Sheepscot River on the east side of Westport Island. The name "Doggett's Castle" stems from colonial history when a distant ancestor of her husband, Capt. Samuel Doggett, traded with the Indians in this location because it was a protected location that could be approached only by water.
