Description
In 1834 the United States Government acquired the title to Goat Island at the entrance to Cape Porpoise Harbor, one of 16 islands within the limits of Kennebunkport.
Cape Porpoise was a main port of call for ships and a beacon was needed to guide them into the harbor. Congress appropriated $6000 to build a lighthouse on Goat Island. Whale oil was burned for the light. In 1860 the lighthouse was remodeled and lard oil replaced the whale oil for its fuel.
