Description
During WWI many hospitals in Europe were converted for the specific purpose of treating wounded soldiers. However, in the struggling times of war it was difficult to maintain the funds for supplies and procedures. In this letter Dr. William B Johnston writes to a young Mildred Burrage, thanking her family for the donations and contributions they sent overseas to aid his facility.
Mildred Burrage was an art student from Kennebunkport, Maine who traveled around Europe for her studies for five years between 1909 and the start of the war in 1914. She was living with Dr. Johnston's family, as he was the father of her best friend, in Giverny when her parents requested she return home for safety. Johnston and Burrage kept some correspondence during the beginning of the war discussing current events, the hospital, and art.
