Description
Chansonetta Stanley Emmons frequently captured portraits of families in their New England homes. Born in Kingfield in 1858, she traveled widely, photographing throughout New England, the Carolinas, the Midwest, Canada, and Europe, driven by her passion for photography. This image of an elderly couple sitting peacefully by the wood stove—the man reading a newspaper and the woman knitting—is likely part of a slide program she compiled to share with audiences. Her daughter, Dorothy, is believed to have hand-tinted these lantern slides.
