Description

The Yale Unit Mobile Hospital was established in 1916 by Joseph Marshall Flint, professor of surgery at the Yale School of Medicine. Mobile Hospital No. 39, also referred to as The Yale Unit, was the "first of its kind in the American Expeditionary Forces," according to Yale University, which houses Dr. Flint's archives. The mobile hospital was staffed by Yale medical faculty and students, and was funded by the Yale Corporation. Dr. Joseph Flint was originally from Connecticut, but retired to Seal Harbor, Maine.

This copy of the photograph was once owned by the Little family of Maine. Albion Henry Little was a Med Corps captain from Portland with the Yale Unit, specializing in ophthalmology. Dr. Little was honorably discharged from the war on January 25, 1919.
