Description
Prior to the U.S. officially joining World War I in April 1917, Portland held a Preparedness Day Parade on March 18th. This is likely a picture of the day's events, meaning these soldiers were from forts in the Greater Portland Area.
Some forts in Casco Bay, such as Fort Williams, were partially or fully manned prior to U.S. involvement in the war in defense from potential overseas threats.
