Description
In January of 1889, the first stones of the Union Mill building were laid in Kennebunk for a new shoe company. Alfred and Warren Kimball were the first lessees creating the Kimball Shoe Company.
Union Mill Company, as the building was known, was unique because it appears to be the only factory that had a weathervane in the shape of a large boot on the tower. The building was formally dedicated on April 10, 1889 with the expenses paid by the town. It was the largest gathering of people to date, under one roof within the boundaries of Kennebunk, with 1,800 people attending. The mill employed about 200 people.
