Description
Amarpreet and Hermeet Kohli immigrated to Maine from India. “As immigrants here, we’re hopeful,” said Hermeet. One challenge they foresaw was raising their children as Sikhs in a place where few people are familiar with their religion. “What’s important to us as a family is that we instill good values. We have a strong commitment to hard work.”
As of 2017, Hermeet Kohli, Ph.D., teaches as an Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, University of Southern Maine and Amarpreet Kohli, Ph.D., teaches as an Assistant Professor, School of Business, University of Southern Maine. While the Kohlis adjusted to the relative lack of diversity on the University of Southern Maine campus, the Maine climate, and limited opportunities for socializing with other Sikhs, they are happy with their decision to come. They have put down roots by buying a home and becoming U.S. citizens. “To be honest, the life here is pretty peaceful” said Amarpreet.
