Description
The Champlain Society was a group of Harvard students who camped and studied the natural world on Mount Desert Island in the 1880s.
The 1880 report from the Ichthyological Department, was led and submitted by Edward L. Rand. The report details the group's scientific findings related to the fish of Mount Desert Island.
Of note are statements about the decline of certain species, like brook trout, due to "reckless fishermen"' and the diminished numbers of herring, "owing to the wanton destruction of the young fish."
