Description
The Champlain Society was a group of Harvard students who camped and studied the natural sciences on Mount Desert Island in the 1880s.
Charles W. Townsend submitted the first report from 1880. Townsend also submitted the second report, written by those who comprised the Marine Invertebrata Department, led by Townsend.
The report details scientific findings related to the study of the marine Invertebrata found on Mount Desert Island during the summer of 1882. Townsend classified list of the Marine invertebrates withnotices of their abundance or rarity, and habitat. The group observed was 92 species, compared to the 1880 report of only 38. The increase in the number of species was due to the group of Mollusca, numbering 53 species, or more than half of the identified species.
