Description
Portland native George James Barker (1889-1956) owned a Red & White grocery store, located at 550 Brighton Avenue in the Deering neighborhood of Portland.
His son Carl R. Barker, born 1928, sat on the pony. Neighborhood children came to the store on a fall day (circa 1939) for a pony ride, a reward for returning five Red & White labels.
George and his wife, the former Eva May Burns (1890-1980), owned and operated the store from approximately 1939 until 1951.
