Description
When Lawrence Newell (1846-1940) retired as a freight handler on the railroad, he became the janitor at the railroad offices at 468 Commercial Street, Portland, home to the Maine Central Railroad and the Portland Terminal Company.
Newell was a native of County Galway, Ireland. His granddaughter Frances Newell Gillan (1916-1996) remembered her grandmother Margaret Greaney Newell making a lunch or dinner for her husband Lawrence and then Frances and her siblings would run down over Clark Street hill and bring it to him at work. Their grandfather would let them run around the office and bang on the typewriters.
