Description
Joseph Meeks, a mariner, was responsible for paying Portland's custom collector $2,000 for goods carried into the port of Portland in 1796. Meeks acted on behalf of a local merchant named Daniel Tucker who, in this instance, imported linen. The port's custom official collected duties on imported goods as a mean to support the United States government, as well as regulate trade.
Nathaniel Fosdick served as Collector of Customs for the Port of Portland and Falmouth from 1788 until 1802. Technically, Fosdick was Portland's first United States Custom Collector, as he was the first in the position to be appointed by a U.S. president.
