Description

This September 19, 1851 letter discussed the estate of the late John Brown Russwurm, governor of Liberia, as well as gave specific instructions as to the care of the remaining Russwurm children as it pertained to their education. The Russwurm children were living in Maine at the time of their father's death. The letter is addressed to Jacob G. Loving, Russwurm's attorney from Samuel McGill, Russwurm's brother-in-law and close colleague in the Liberian government.

Samuel McGill (1815-1871), Maryland native and Dartmouth Medical school graduate, would become the first colonial doctor of Liberia, and later serve as governor from 1848 to 1853 following the decline in health of his predecessor, John B. Russwurm.

Jacob G. Loving (1780-1860) was a North Yarmouth based lawyer, who shared a close personal and professional relationship with the Russwurm family. Loving acted as Russwurm's agent in the United States, balancing his accounts, correspondence and most importantly caring for the children during Sarah Russwurm's illnesses and absences, a role Loving shared with Susan Hawes, John B. Russwurm's stepmother.
