Description
The five sons of Ebenezer Freeman III and his wife, Hannah Atkins Newcombe Freeman, sat for this photograph in September, 1882. The back of the frame suggests the work of Algernon Stubbs, 443 Congress Street, Portland.
Originally from Wellfleet, Massachusetts, at least one of the sons, Ebenezer, moved to Portland in 1864 with his wife, Maris Snow. He was a ship broker and worked in that capacity until his death in 1891.
Ebenezer and Maris's son, Eben Winthrop Freeman, was a graduate of Portland High School (1881), Bowdoin College (1885) and Boston University Law School (1888). He practiced law on Exchange Street in Portland with his son, Francis Pike Freeman, and also served as the Clerk of the Federal District Court for many years, retiring in 1948.
Interestingly, the back of the photograph lists the names, ages and weights of each man.
