Description
William May Achorn, a widower, (1836-1920) stood in the front doorway of his house at 95 Main Street; the Achorn Bros. store was next door.
William went to the gold mines in Timbuctoo, California, in 1864, and as a result of a mining accident, one leg was amputated. When he came home to Liberty his niece Addie Whitehouse Worthing (1858-1952) remembered in her memoir that "he had one good leg and one that was just a stick. When he walked he swung the stick leg and he used a cane in one hand." In 1868 William returned to Timbuctoo and when he came home the second time, Addie recalled he had a new leg, wore two shoes and used a cane. After working at a store in Palermo for a few years William brought his wife Eltheir Cox (1844-1891) and their daughters Ina and Sarah to Coopers Mills in 1878.
