Description
Soldiers and tents are seen at the Maine National Guard camp for the Spanish-American War in Augusta in 1898.
The National Guard camp was named Camp Keyes in 1882 in honor of Gen. Erasmus D. Keyes (1810-1865), a Massachusetts native and graduate of West Point.
The location of the camp was the site of Benedict Arnold's encampment during his ill-fated march to Quebec in 1775.
