Description
In 1914, the Bangor Daily News reported on the opening of The Inn in Oakfield.
Built by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad for its employees because of a shortage of local housing and for the public, the Inn cost $30,000 and was painted in the company colors of dark green with brown trim.
The Inn featured hardwood floors and steam heat throughout with electricity generated at the B&A shop in Oakfield.
There were 48 sleeping rooms and large baths in the basement for workers to bathe in when coming off work before going to their rooms.
Designed by F.A. Patterson of Bangor, the general contractor was A.E. Ames of Houlton with heating and plumbing installed by C.H. Babb & Company of Bangor.
The Inn was sold to Oakfield in 1934 for $11,000 and served for many years as the high school until it burned in 1973.
