Description
Hand bill advertising "reasonable rates" for The Inn in Oakfield, Maine. This Inn was established by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad Company primarily to house its employees during the overnight stops of the train. The Inn, built for $30,000, was painted in the B&A's, at that time, newly adopted company colors of dark green with brown trim. The Inn featured hardwood floors and steam heat throughout with electricity generated at the B&A shop in Oakfield. There were 48 sleeping rooms and large baths in the basement for workers to bathe in when coming off work before going to their rooms. Designed by F.A. Patterson of Bangor, the general contractor was A.E. Ames of Houlton with heating and plumbing installed by C.H. Babb & Company of Bangor.
The Inn was later donated to Oakfield in 1934 and served for many years as the public school until in burnt in 1973.
