Description
This 1954 recipe flyer outlined a menu for a ladies luncheon--including punch, tea sandwiches, a summer fruit salad, and complete with a deluxe pecan pie. It was part of the Central Maine Power Company's (CMP) ElectriKitchen Series on WPMT-TV (Portland) and WLAM-TV (Lewiston.) The menu strayed from the CMP Home Service Department's initial mission of promoting and educating about electric appliances, and focused more on building a relationship with the 'modern' bride.
Indicative of the era, the recipes included excessive fruit garnishes and deviled meats. Examples of 1950s cuisine included fruits served in lettuce cups, mint sherbet, and the addition of potato chips to the summer salad plate. The menu's author provided detailed instruction on how to arrange the fruit on the salad plate, but assumed the reader knew how to make a pastry crust for the pecan pie. The pre-made frozen pie crust emerged on the scene about a year later in 1955.
