Description
Pepperell Mill's Research and Development department worked on creating new products in building #9 on the fourth floor, including this Prototype flocking module.
The prototype was invented around 1960 by Francis Spencer and his team to develop the Vellux blanket which enabled the Biddeford Plant to remain open for another 42 years.
Vellux is a blanket, made from petroleum-based products, it is a synthetic product that is light weight, yet durable, insulates well, and feels soft as velvet.
The blanket material consists of two layers of foam with a nylon mesh between to give it strength. The layers are bonded together and then covered with nylon flock requiring no weaving.
