Description
A daguerreotype of Lucretia Day Sewall shows her posed for a portrait in an elegant dress, bonnet, and leather gloves. Lucretia (1813–1895) married Kiah Bayley Sewall (1807–1865) in 1836. Kiah lived in New York to resolve debts from land speculation and studied law, while Lucretia remained in Portland, where their first child was born.
Kiah eventually established a law practice in Mobile, Alabama, where their other children were born, and the family moved to in 1839. Some of the children were in Maine frequently to attend school, and their mother often returned in the summers.
