Description
Section one of the Maine Turnpike, which ran from Kittery to South Portland, was completed in 1947. The Maine Legislature conceived the idea of the toll road six years earlier because of concerns about traffic safety and congestion on Route 1.
The bridge over the Saco River in Saco was re-decked starting in 1971. At this time it was the biggest project the Maine Turnpike had undertaken since the construction of the turnpike in the 1940s.
