Description
The first section of Maine Turnpike was completed in 1947. The highway started near the Maine side of the Piscataqua River and ended in South Portland, near Exit 44 as of 2019.
In 1947 there were four exits on the turnpike: Wells, Kennebunk, Biddeford, and Saco. The speed limit on was 60 miles per hour. The Portland Sunday Telegram called the new Maine Turnpike a "mile a minute" highway. The road had four wide clearly marked lanes with a central grass median.
