Description
Construction of the Kennebunk Service Plazas started in 1971 and finished in July 1972. The service plazas included two new restaurants, one northbound and one southbound, two new gas stations, and picnic areas.
The total cost for the two plazas was $3.35 million. The restaurants replaced a single smaller restaurant on the south side of the turnpike that was connected to the north side by a tunnel for foot traffic. The tunnel was closed with the new construction.
It was recognized that the Kennebunk facilities needed to be improved as more people came onto the Turnpike and were traveling long distances. The old Kennebunk restaurant and service facilities had served the turnpike well, but it was time for an improvement. Each restaurant included a cafeteria and counter service, as well as a dining room. The seating capacity for each side was about 275 people.
Both plazas also included new and improved service station facilities, including provisions for diesel fuel and other features. Enlarged parking layouts were designed for the greatest convenience and the efficient accommodation of all types of vehicles.
