Contributed by Maine Turnpike Authority
Description
Maine Turnpike maintenance crews relied on right-handed snow plows that were state-of-the-art for the day, but not very efficient for the new, wide Maine Turnpike.
During the 1950s the Maine Turnpike Authority commissioned what is thought to be the first left-handed snow plow in the country. Using the new plow, the Maine Turnpike Authority crews adopted a new technique called "gang plowing" that paired right-handed and left-handed plows together for more efficient snow removal.
