Description
In 1924, Russell Leonard, a new treasurer for the Pepperell Mills, believed that Pepperell needed to move away from the coarse sheeting that had been used for nearly 50 years to a finer type of goods. He developed a distinctive product that appealed to all income groups in the country.
Pepperell Mills sheet fabrics changed from weave count of 64 by 64 to a finer 68 by 76 with 144 treads per inch. The new sheets were given the distinctive title of Lady Pepperell, the maiden name of two women for which the company had been named. The package inscription stated: "Lady Pepperell...one of America's royal family of sheets".
A year later after a survey, Pepperell made two additions to the line of sheets. One carded sheet product called the Pepperell Fine Count and a fine combed one called Pepperell Peeress.
