Description
Pauline Shay, a member of the Penobscot Nation, posed with one of her barrel shaped baskets. The Portland Sunday Telegram reported on Shay's educational advocacy work in removing religious curriculum from the schools on Indian Island, and on her basketmaking.
Pauline and her mother, Margaret, were living in Portland to allow a younger sister, Violet, to attend Portland Schools. Living in Portland made it difficult to procure ash for basketmaking, and this article stated she recently "lost a carload due to fire."
