Description
William Howard Taft was the guest of honor at a Gala Day for Houlton during May 16 and 17, 1917, where he was garnering support for World War I.
The only President to ever visit Houlton, President Taft took his motorcade through Market Square. On Wednesday, May 16, he addressed over 600 people at the Opera House on Court Street, then the scholars at both Ricker Classical Institute and Houlton High School in the auditorium. On Wednesday morning May 17, he addressed the people of Houlton at a flag raising ceremony in Market Square.
