Description
Maine General Hospital gradually spread its campus along the top of Bramhall Hill in Portland's West End. In 1929, workers removed the surgical amphitheater erected in 1885, once the pride of a young and growing institution, and replaced it with a new pavilion. Despite the national market crash, the pavilion opened in 1931. The pavilion's top floor housed a new obstetrics unit, the sixth floor featured seven new operating rooms, the fourth and fifth floors housed new private rooms and a nursery. The first three floors were left unfurnished to accommodate future expansion.
Maine General Hospital is the predecessor of Maine Medical Center.
