Description
The Maine General Hospital 1929 Pavilion (Pavilion A) extended from the building's original East Pavilion. The 1929 Pavilion quickly became known as the Private Pavilion, as it housed a number of private rooms for the paying patients critical to MGH's financial stability. The Portland Sunday Telegram hailed the opening, calling Maine General "one of the most modern hospitals in the country," and claimed that it boasted "the latest equipment known to medical science." There were electric elevators, a lighting system with battery-powered back up in case an outage occurred during an operation, and heated verandas on each floor. Patients could relax in sunrooms, where "helioglass" windows allowed ultraviolet rays, thought to be good for health. The pavilion's solarium was removed when the Maine Medical Center Pavilion was added in 1956.
Maine General Hospital is the predecessor of Maine Medical Center.
