Description
Maine Medical Center formed in 1951, with the merger of Maine General Hospital, Children's Hospital, and Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary. A major new addition to the current complex was required to accommodate the growing hospital, and necessitated the demolition of homes on Bramhall Street. Arsenal Street was closed to make way for the building, which was constructed over it, and nine Bramhall Street houses were purchased and demolished. As the opening of the new facility neared, patients put off elective surgery so they could be among the first to receive treatment at the new Maine Medical Center.
