Description
In 1951, Maine General Hospital, Children's Hospital, and Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary merged to form Maine Medical Center. To accommodate the growing hospital, a new wing was required. Construction on the structure began in August 1954 and continued for two years. Arsenal Street was closed and the building constructed on top of it, and nine residences on Bramhall Street were demolished. The reservoir visible in this image, just beyond Bramhall Street, was eventually purchased by MMC and drained in the 1960s during the Richards Wing construction project.
