Description
Twenty-one year-old Mary Lewis, of Cousins Island wore this red wool cape on her wedding day in 1773, two years before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. Lewis married Captain Daniel Mitchell, who served in the Penobscot Expedition. Together, they had eight children.
Pink silk was used for the hood lining and trim. The body of the cape is unlined and not hemmed. The top portion of the cape was cut on the bias, while the bottom of the cape was seamed.
