Description
Bird's eye view of the city of Portland looking from the Atlantic Ocean. Steamboats, sailboats and crew boats were along the wharfs. Other bodies of water included the Fore River, the Canal Basin, Mill Pond and Back Cove. Factories included tanneries, sugar refineries, and coffee manufacturers. The Portland & Ogdensburg R.R., the Maine Central R.R., the Portland & Rochester R.R. and the Grand Trunk R.R. all ran through the city.
